Month: April 2004

  • Since Miss D asked, my camera list is so far:

    Canon Canonet GIII
    Nikon Coolpix 2100
    Holga 120SF
    Keystone Everflash 10
    Meikai 4 Shooter
    Minolta X 370
    Polaroid 420 Land Camera
    Yashica Electro 35 GSN
    Yashica Electro 35
No name, cheap plastic panoramic camera

I'm pretty much set from now on. Until I find the next one, that is.

  • Devotion

    I am thinking it's a sign,
that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images
and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned.
And I have to speculate that God himself
did make us into corresponding shapes
like puzzle pieces from the clay.
-The Postal Service, "Such Great Heights"

I found yet another camera. Erin and I stopped at a thrift store yesterday and on the way out I saw a camera bag stuffed with goodies. My find? A Minolta X 370 SLR, everything in the camera bag (camera, 2 lenses, a UV lens and hot shoe flash) for $40. My collection is pretty much complete now.
After some battery related ghetto hacks and valiantly declared affirmations ("I WILL take pictures with this camera today damn it!"), I got the Polaroid 420 Land Camera to work. Erin and I hit the mangroves, which we both decided are neat to visit, but extremely boring to photograph. After walking around for a few minutes, I found the skeletal remains of some creature. We couldn't figure out what it was, most likely an opossum or cat. Erin found a perfectly intact and bleached femur or similar and took it home.
I wonder if she'll put it in her hair and let me club her over the head and drag her off to my cave.
    Such profound things to contemplate.
Last night, we went to a section of downtown with the redundantly vague yet intercappingly hip name of "CityPlace". Basically a renovated section of downtown. Unbeknownst to us, it was prom night. In retaliation, we drank Starbucks and ruthlessly stereotyped people for our own personal amusement.
    - "Oh, here's another Paris Hilton."
    - "They're on the soccer team."
    - "She'll be doing porn movies to support her coke habit."
    - "She's with him for the money."
    - "Those are the kids that know too many words to hang out with the real thugs, but try anyways. Their parents will only let them listen to Will Smith."
    - "He's a sensitive thug. He'll smack his bitch, but listen to Usher and cry about it afterwards."
    - "They're the Chess Club."
    Fun times... fun times.
Oh, and have a Happy Bunny Day.

    Purchased today:
1 Soft focus filter for the Yashica
1 Lens cap for the Yashica
1 Cable release for the Yashica
1 Roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 film for the toy panoramic camera
    Found yesterday:
    1 crappy single use camera
I took it apart and figured out how to reload it. While it was in pieces on my table, I figured "Why not flip the lens over and see what happens?". So I did. I might shoot with it this weekend. We'll see.

I finally finished rebuilding the galleries for my photo site. You can view them by clicking here.
In other news, I'm becoming very interested in photojournalism and ants have invaded my CD player. I haven't felt like writing much, as I'm sure you've noticed. No idea why, I just haven't had much to say. Perhaps I'm just letting my photography do the talking for the moment.

  • These are some of the most visceral, terrible, haunting, heart breaking images I've ever seen.

Nothing to say today, other than 8 hour long training seminars suck and give me a huge headache.

Yesterday was almost a total bust. I got to the beach, took a couple of shots of one of the pathways through the sea grape plants on the dune, and went back to my car to drive closer to the pier. The car doesn't start, so I fiddle with the battery terminals, which have been giving me problems lately. Nothing. The car doesn't want to start. I fiddle some more, taking each terminal apart and dumping the remnants of a Coke on them (This actually works. The acids in the soda remove corrosion), clean them off with some water and try again. Nothing. I'm not mad though. Not even close. Just disappointed. I packed up all my camera gear, sling it across my shoulder and start walking. The nearest pay phone is about 2 miles away. Luckily, there's a cop less than half a mile away who lets me use his cell phone. I call AAA and walk back to the car to wait. The dispatcher said they'll be there before 9:30 am, and it was 8:00 am when I made the call.
I wait until 10:00 am. No truck.
I grab my bag, sling it and start walking again. This time I walk the 2 miles to the shopping center and call AAA again. They tell me the driver said I wasn't at the location. I tell them otherwise and that I never even saw a truck. They're sending another one, to the location of the car. I tell her, "I'm not walking 2 miles back to the car. Tell the driver to pick me up here." and give her the address.
15 minutes later, the driver shows up, takes me to my car. "You don't really appreciate how long a mile is, or 2 miles, until you've walked it", I thought to myself when we arrived at the car. He tests and jumps the battery and the car starts. So I leave, to get a new battery.
Having done that, and installing it, I'm just too tired to deal. Nap time. I set the alarm for 3:30 pm, thinking to go downtown before I lose too much light.
I went and was able to get about 2 hours of walking and photos done with the Yashica and the Holga.
    How was your day?

I've been awake since Erin left, around 4am. I figured it would be easier to stay awake rather than go back to sleep and wake up at 6, so I made coffee, read a little (Rainbow 6 by Tom Clancy. Not my standard fare, but easy and quickly paced). It's still, quiet, peaceful in the early hours. Which is why I prefer waking up early. Plus, I'm taking a photo expedition today. The Holga (1 roll of Fuji Tungsten film, 1 roll of Kodak Porta bw), the Yashica (1 roll of Fuji Superia), and the 4 Shooter (1 roll of Fuji Superia). The Juno pier, downtown West Palm, the Morikami. I plan on taking all the back ways, all the small roads, stopping where ever something catches my eye. Taking my time.

My new camera came yesterday, an original Yashica Electro 35 (not a G series). It's in AMAZING condition. Almost brand new condition. The only visible sign of its age is the label on the inside of the battery cover is peeling. Wow. The best part is that it came with the original hard case, the add-on view finder, a wide angle lens and UV/haze lens for it, a telephoto lens and UV/haze lens for it, a UV/haze lens for the camera, the auto up adaptor. The works. For $65, you can't beat that. I might be sending it off to Mark Hama (Mark Hama Yashica repair site) to have the electric eye adjusted so I can use it with alkaline batteries rather than hunting high and low for illegal mercury batteries.
I'm taking the wide angle out with me this weekend. I can't wait.
I've had too much caffeine and I feel sick to my stomach from it.
    Yech.
Oh yeah. You might want to bookmark this site. You know, just in case.
